College Students, Veterans, Old Folks Shut Down Capitol Hill (VIDEOS)

By David Swanson

Today was the day for Stop-Loss Congress. We notified every Congress Member and Senator over the past two days that they were being stop-lossed and denied permission to leave until they end the occupation of Iraq. Today we took action. A group of activists dressed as Ghosts of War stood and spoke in the Senate and closed the place down - 10 arrests, I'm told.

Then groups of dozens of people, primarily college students, split up and blocked intersections and garage exits around the Hill. I went with a group of 40 or so to the intersection of Independence Ave. and 1st Street, which we blocked for a long time, with people and coffins and banners and megaphones. Dozens were arrested, most of them college students, some Vets for Peace and other old folks too. I shot video of the whole thing.

More, more, and more again!

These are the true American heroes of today. I watched these videos in sequence. By the time I was half-way finished viewing "Here come the police," I was in tears and sobbing, literally sobbing. Something I haven't done in over 15 years. I cried for the degenerative state of this country and at the same time, I cried for the courage of those who literally stand-up & put themselves at risk to voice their rights and all of our rights to object to this facist overtaking of the U.S.A.

Here's where you will find me in Portland, OR this Saturday, March 15, 2008: http://www.pdxpeace.org/

Where will you be?

I must be jaded.

I didn't cry until I saw the last one on youtube (not here yet).

Thank you, David!

My Heros

You may have not noticed the 3 "older" men sitting in the street with the students. I met them all in Crawford Texas as part of the now famous campcasey family. We all came together then and have been a big part of the movement since then. They all served valiantly in Vietnam and yesterday wanted to go with the students, many of whom had never been arrested before.

Mike, Bruce and Will are my forever heros. I love you guys.

Again, I ask ....

Where will you be March 15th?

I'm keeping this blog open. We can pontificate and vociferate all we want -- but where will you be this weekend?

Please commit.

I stayed through the whole lot of them even though I have to go to work this morning. I agree with the final words of the young man on the last video.

Here are six developments that may have Iran as a common thread. And, if it comes to war, they may be seen as clues as to what was planned. None of them is conclusive, and each has a credible non-Iran related explanation:

I have tears in my eyes because I'm so proud of these kids (and people of all ages) who are protesting the war. They are true patriots, with big hearts and brave souls. I want to tell them that they did a great job standing up for what they believe in.

Revolution???

Hey loons!

What revolution?

All I see is liberal screwball fuckhead Democrat losers getting arrested instead of getting run over by DC drivers, like they should have been.

How's that majority thing working out for you now nutcases???

What will you do when we attack Iran???
Jump off a cliff???

The Surge has WORKED and you are on the wrong side of history.

Traitors

Anti-American scum.

You all need a trip to club-Gitmo.

Now, back to the coming war with Iran

non violent actions taken by brave students

People like you are the scum. You are arrogant racist scum. These young people are
defending the constitution which this Administration has torn to shreds. Many members
of congress are not representing the majority's wishes for us to end this illegal and
immoral war. It's time for you to get educated.

Hey NAZI

I can see you've never read the US COSTITUTION!
IRAQ is an INSCONSTITIONAL WAR!
I HOPE YOU VOLUNTEER FOR IRAN. Otherwise you will be DRAFTED!
YOU ARE AN ANTIAMERICAN and a NEOCON PUPPET!
THE IRAQ OCCUPATION WILL NEVER WORK!
BUSH SURGE IS A LIE!
IF WE ATTACK IRAN IT WILL BE THE BEGGINING OF WWIII!

Very moving ---

Thank you for the opportunity to see this ---

The best and the brightest were there and my thanks to all of them ---

Send the police to Iraq...............

These protestors are American patriots. They are exercising their constitutional rights to peacefully assemble. While watching these wonderful videos, I thought no where in the Constitution does it say a person needs a permit from ANY city, county, or state or from the federal government to peacefully assemble to redress grievances to the government. Actually, the streets are paid for by the people's taxes. Once again, the police prove themselves to be an arm of a fascist government we have known not only during the Iraq debacle but the Vietnam debacle as well. Here's an idea, let's have the all police suit up and get sent to Iraq along with all College Republicans. See how they enjoy a vacation in the tropical Middle East all expenses paid by Bush/Cheney and the Democrats in Congress. Maybe there is a donut shop there in between the American government's bomb craters to prove capitalism is alive and well in the middle of war.

America?

Thanks to the people in office for the past 7 years America is no longer the country our grandparents and parents taught us to be proud of. At 60 years of age, I am no longer proud to call myself an American. A true American does not shop at Wal-Mart and sit on his fat butt watching TV while his counry is being torn apart by corrupt politicians. We are in a mess people. We need big changes in DC and in our own backyards.

Well Done America's Youth

I too got so emotional and cried at your standing up for your rights. It's about time!!! This is what the world has been waiting for, for the truth seekers and carers to take the fight right up to Bush and Cheney. May all the souls still alive in Iraq and Afganistan gain some hope from all this.
